A hint to car sellers

July 24th, 2007 No comments

If you are selling your car in the UK then please, please go and visit Parkers.co.uk or buy a copy of the guide.  It will tell you how much your car is actually worth, then add a bit for bargaining perhaps.

What I don’t suggest you do is advertise your car with bugger all service history, chips in the screen, a spare type that doesn’t fit the car,  badly sprayed wings (so indicative of a home spray to cover up rust or your inability to park), lie about having it it recently serviced but the documentation is “at the accountants” (but not stamped in the book),  at £700 over the recommended sale price for your vehicle (£2300).  Then if someone offers you what your car is worth (plus car tax value) get in a huff and stomp about as if you’ve been slapped with a kipper.

Damnable time-wasting  son of a bitch.  I hope your car is written off then you will realise how little its worth you pathetic little man.

Hmmmm it all got a bit personal in the end there didn’t it.

In case your wondering I said on leaving, “Well never mind, thanks for your time” and shook him by the hand and bid him farewell.  When I actually wanted to say all the above and call him a dick.

So This was the scene this weekend.  Four passengers my wife, five year old son, 6 month old son and I.  We got hit at well its hard to estimate,  it felt like we were bounced across the road.  My five year old was sat at the point of impact and hit his head on the window.

Before I continue.  Everyone is fine.  All of us, my son does have a small bump on his head but he’s had worse, I have a pain in the neck but how that was caused I can’t say.

The other party phoned the police and someone went to the fire station and informed them there was a crash nearby involving a baby.  So after both of those it was bedlam, we had three police cars turn up (one went later) and a fire engine and an ambulance.  It was a little overkill but I was amazed and pleased at the speed of response we got.  The fire peeps must have not had another call to go to as they spent time checking everyone over before the paramedics arrived and our car to see if its drivable, or leaking!  Then one of the guys asked our little boy if he wanted to see in the fire engine.  He went in the back and saw the breathing things and they put the mask on him.  Which I have to admit was a really nice touch as he was really shook up by the whole thing and later said this was the worst day of his life.  So the services later dissipated and left us with the police and they took details and we drove back home.

So I wonder what the NCAP rating for an Y reg clio. Considering the force of the impact and the amount of damage I’d say it was favourable. I wonder If it would be better in my ’03 Mondeo (yes I own a ford and I love it (well this version the last version I despised)).

I think I can be thankful for ever increasing car safety.  I can be thankful it was a small car that hit us and not a huge truck (for those who say SUV, its a bloody truck).  I can be thankful for the emergency services.  I can be thankful everyone is ok.

Will I be thankful for insurance companies is to be seen.

New ISP

June 12th, 2007 No comments

Well that was smooth.  I signed up with UKFSN for broadband.  Got my mac from Plus.Net and the switchover was today and guess what it just worked.  No hiccups not support required it just worked.

But and heres the bonus some magical reason I got a 2.5mb line now and it works and it flies when Im rated at 512mb.

UKFSN also gave me all the web and mail access a week before so I could migrate files etc.   This needed some help as it was early. The ticket turnround was under two hours (mailed in) that might sound like a long time but when your used to seven ours plus its fantastic.  I’m yet to try telephone support so far with a 2 hr turnround I might never need to.

Parenting 2

My wife and I are sad old goths.  When Jarreth was born (he’s five now) we used to get the usual “Are you going to get him black sleepsuits” and the like.  The resounding answer was “NO!”, “He’s going to be dressed in colours.  He’s going to be guided down the line of being a bloody sheep, one of the crowd”.

You can’t be an outcast when your one of the crowd.  Something my wife and I know a lot about from when we were kids.

But despite all your good work and hard effort of removing the trappings of gothdom from the house and environment your children are parts of you. Take this conversation I had recently.  I like wildlife, I would not call myself a twitcher but I have a book on birds which me and Jarreth were looking through and it went a bit like this.

Dad: opens book asks “What’s that ?”

Jarreth : “a Peckwooker”.

Dad : “He he close enough”.  “Whats that?”

Jarreth: “An owl”.

Dad: “What’s he say ? “

Jarreth : “Twit-woo”

various other birds later

Dad: “What’s that ?”

Jarreth : “A Crow ?”

Dad : “No it’s a raven, Do you know what it says ?”

Jarreth : “Never More”.

Cats are well

May 24th, 2007 No comments

This is in response to a comment.

In the excitement i forgot to post an update.  The cats are not dead.  In fact both are now very well indeed, a little more tootless than before, but much better.  Kryten has stitches in his mouth but they will eventually dissolve and Holly is now eating far more than before, will have to watch that.

So result.  A lot poorer than usual this month, but I just think if it were my teeth I’d be bankrupt by now with the amount of work they had.

Moral: Brush your animals teeth, or feed them some kind of vet dental approved food even if its now and again, better than just wet food.  It will keep your animal well and pain free and your bank balance in better stead than if you don’t.

Going Under

May 14th, 2007 No comments

So here I sit in work, feeling sick as a dog.  I woke up sick with a stinking headache and then it got worse as I took the cats to the vets.  Both are having their teeth done, not just kryten although he’s the worst.  So I signed the form that reminds me that a general anaesthetic for animals over 8 years old is a risky affair so 15 is quite a bit older,  I sit and wait.

IBS and stress don’t go so I sit drinking coffee and popping immodium and trying to figure out the right function call to remove a sap users email address.  Stupid language or rather half soaked sap developers who can’t maintain commonality between their own function calls, and I used to think sharepoint developers were bad.

I’m just hoping I don’t get a phone call and I have to ring them at 1.00pm, no phone calls are good in this case.

Jail Paris ?

May 9th, 2007 No comments

There is a petition on the net that Ms Hilton has started petitioning the governor to prevent her incarceration following a DUI (drink-driving) offence.  Whilst I can understand anyone wanting to get off a custodial sentence, lets face it who wouldn’t that’s what lawyers are for after all.  Perhaps this is pushing it a bit.

This is probably one of a few petitions that will appear asking the governor to throw her in jail

This did appeal to me, but am I signing it ? No.  Having witnessed the behaviour of some famous personalities there is one word that springs to mind.

Vendetta.

If it was you ? what could you do with immense wealth and a large dose of anger behind you ? Hopefully accept your punishment and say far cop guv.

Signing this, I might never get to stay at a Hilton again, although since going permie I might never afford to stay at one again.

So in the interests of fairness and perhaps a discount card ;-) ,  here’s the other link (for USA peeps only this one)

Tramampoline !

April 22nd, 2007 No comments

I am just a big kid, Sue wanted me to get a trampoline for the summer, keep Jarreth from going on about Xbox (cos he ain’t playing except for weekends).  I grudgingly agreed but deep in side a little voice was doing a Homer and shouting “Tramampoline! tramampoline!”.

It’s really great we have had loads of fun on it already.  It’s has 10ft diameter and that’s quite big, certainly big for my garden and it came with a safety net and weather cover all for the lovely price of £150. I managed to assemble it myself in about 1.5 hours, it was easy, and within another half an hour I managed to hurt myself.

Today I ache. My legs my arms my back is killing, one thing you don’t get with it is ibuprofen. Even Sue had a go and kind of enjoyed it, which is a big deal considering she came close to losing her tongue when she nearly bit it off in a trampolining accident in school.  Much of our tutelage to Jarreth in the art of trampolining involved telling him to shut his mouth when he’s bouncing.

Still I cannot recommend it enough we got it from “Tim Bear Garden“, now we were able to visit the shop as they are based locally to us and we could see a complete range of things so we did not purchase from the web but direct. I wish we had a huge garden as there were some great climbing frames Jarreth was all over one of them as it had proper climbing holds as I’ve told him when he’s older we’re going climbing so he wanted to practice.

For the serious bouncer they also have some really good trampolines made by TP, much better quality than the duraplay we got, but with a larger price tag to match the quality. It’s midnight and dark outside but I want another go, perhaps I can sneak out before work tomorrow.

Kids Tv or Damn SKY

April 6th, 2007 No comments

skytv I think kids TV is getting a bit to realistic, take a look at this explanation of what this weeks episode of Lazy Town is about.

Now I wouldn’t normally mind errors on the EPG but when your with Sky+ they CHARGE you for the EPG, and its never bloody right, it can’t handle doing things when two recordings are happening, EVER HEARD OF DISK CACHE you useless morons.

The sooner I can wean my son off Sky the better.  Media centre PC coming soon to replace Sky’s useless half baked PVR solution.

Top Gear

February 21st, 2007 1 comment

I’m not a car fan.  It serves a purpose A->B and thats it. I have a motorbike for my speed thrill, and danger thrill for that matter, having been thrown of the handlebars of one* gives you a constant sense of fear even now ten+ years later.  So it followed that car programs don’t really do it for me.

I remember catching the odd top gear in its old format and hating it I never once got through a whole episode.  I avoided it ever since.

My mistake.

I recently caught two episodes of this “new” Top Gear an hour long show, the last episode was hilarious, all the car information for the petrol heads but presented with a lighter side for anyone else.

The last one I saw launched a “Plastic Pig”** in a space shuttle type launch.  This was just brilliant, it almost worked, well not in the way that a car is an adequate replacement for a re-usable spaceship, but in achieving the goal of launching and returning to earth this unusual space-ship.  To see it ignite and propel a Tamworth born plastic pig into the air was spectacular,  (Look for it on YouTube I bet someone put it there).  This and a previous episode I saw where they tried to lay a road in 24hours and other such features and add clarkeson’s excellent and often scathing car reviews makes this a program for those of us who don’t care about the number of horses in the latest supercar makes this a must see.

So If you’ve missed this program for the last five years I cannot recommend that you take a look you will be pleasantly surprised.

*Luckily quite early in my bike riding history on a small 125 doing 20mph it hurt, I bounced off the road, kerb and finally smacked into a post.

**A Plastic Pig is the rather deferential name given to a three wheeled car called the Reliant Robin.  A car once built in my home town.  Imagine living in a place (in)famous for the creation of such a nationwide joke.  Like any ridiculous idea it had its supporters.  I’m not one of them.
