Skinned Parts Error
Oct 31st
Apparently there is a slight problem with the WebPart base code, it interferes with RenderWorkItemTimeout or rather ignores it completly.
So be aware of this and possibly other problems. Will post solution when I have one.
Dan just got quoted
Oct 13th
Well I’m gob smacked. Dan (istherefood) has just been quoted, above ars technica, on ZD News.
Dan’s article on the new iPod can be found here.
Todd’s Deleted Items Doc Lib
Oct 7th
Todd Bleeker has posted an article on his blog complete with link to the new template he has developed for a Doc Lib complete with recycle bin that the user can restore.
This is a fantastic solution It’s as good as it looks ,Todd demo’d this to me at the PDC and I was blown away. That and his series about uses of the Content Editor WebPart Series are just brilliant.
So Take a good look through Todd’s blog and not just this article you might find some real gems.

New Hosting
Oct 5th
Well I ditched webhost4life and switched to Catalyst2. I was having speed issues with wh4l and constant restarts (despite my keep-alive attempts via rss) and was coming close to the end of my year with them.
I switched to catalyst2, now this was a bit of a shock at first you get no where near the amount of control over the environment as wh4l, like individual file permissions, secure folders and users, the ability to text edit the files (you can edit html but not .configs it appears). There is no web upload facility its ftp only.
I uploaded dasBlog to catalyst2 and it just didn’t work, security errors. I contacted support and they happily fixed the problem, it was a problem they designed in as they do not give high levels of trust by default you have to request it. Now this might sound like a pain but its not, they were so quick and helpful and detailed with the reasons.
So despite the noddy Helm interface Im very happy so far and I would recommend them. Plus they are cheap.
Note if you are daft enough, like me, to host your blog in a subdomain as you used to host 3 More >
Handy Cassini
Oct 5th
For those who have never heard of it Cassini is a tiny little web server written in .NET, for those who have, its really neat and handy.
I had a chap who wanted to demo some static HTML mockups to clients, but for some reason (XPSP2) I.E. was bitching about activeX controls because he was running off the local file system.
One Simple install of Cassini, register the cassini DLL in the GAC (Very important gives bogus conflict error otherwise), and he was away a simple quick solution and portable solution to that problem without the need to resort to a full blown IIS installation.
FeedDemon
Oct 5th
For a while now I’ve been reading blogs and tried a couple of readers, sharp reader, omea and rss bandit.
I found them all to be slow to start, omea I just uninstalled after about 10 minutes and rss bandit has been my reader of choice up to now. I like the interface and it kinda works. But its slow, it leaks memory, I have to restart it twice a day to ensure that it picks up feeds again as it just starts to error during the day and will not work. But I found this all over.
Dan uses feed demon and has been saying how great it is for ages, but it doesn’t have a tree view, it doesn’t (until new betas) fetch all channels all the time just the selected one. It costs money.
I finally thought I can’t really judge until I’ve tried it so downloaded the 1.5 demo, the version that doesn’t update all channels in background. Well within a couple of hours I bought it, paid me money and made my choice.
This reader just knocks spots off all the others, I still have gripes, the tree view, and the notification icon (not always accurate, sometimes doesn’t More >
Its all a bit quiet
Oct 5th
If there is anyone out there who might read this blog, you may have noticed Im a quiet of lat. Well the reason is that our sharepoint installation and customisation project is finished and Im back to knocking up intranet sites of dubious value to the company and very simplistic, (wish I had infopath server).
So I haven’t had that much to say about SPS/WSS as Im sick to death of it and glad to see the back of it for a while. I know I’ve some templating work to do at some point and the office12 R&D and possibly installation, but for now, “Sharepoint, enough already”.
